The planning begins

I’m beginning to play my return to North America.

There isn’t that much to plan really as I’m going to be staying at Kip’s place in Breckenridge for the winter. One thing I do need to get is a car and I was wondering if any of you readers out there can help me out with some advice….

I can’t buy a car in Colorado because I don’t have a Colorado Drivers Licence (and I can’t get one because I’m only on a tourist VISA).

Does anyone know if different states have different rules? I have friends in California and Texas that I could visit and buy my car there and drive to Colorado?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

I think you need a driver’s license to drive in any state.

Mark,

Thanks for you quick reply mate.

Driving itself has never been an issue (even insurance hasn’t been an issue) but registering a car has been an issue because I don’t have a US drivers licence.

I suppose I’m wondering about 2 things.

1. Is there a state where I can register a vehicle without a state drivers licence.
2. Is there a state where I can get a drivers licence as a tourist (I’m sure I could get an address easy enuf).

OK,

I emailed a car yard today in San Fran (that is where I enter the US) and the guy said that I can buy a car there on my international licence.

Wooohoooo!!!

I have a good friend who lives in San Fran so I might spend a week there and then drive over to Colorado (via Vegas – or Reno) probably.

Now I’m going to double check the Colorado and Utah laws.

Glad to hear you’ll be back in this region of the world soon! And again, if Will is still in B.C. and you head up there, consider passing through Washington on the way!

Hey Dave. You really do like NIKE speedos! Love the pair in the picture! Hey you did ask me to post my adventures with the 19yo guy at Rydges which was great fun last November. I posted it in “Whitespeedos” especially for you and not sure if you read it. “Hot Rydges Arvo”. Anyway, thinking of doing another adventure again next week, as you know hotties finish their exams this week travel interstate!! Hope you are well and will watch your posts! Robert, Adelaide

Hey mate, I can speak from experience, but you may not like the answer. You can buy a car from a private party in California without any id other than your Aussie license. The private party won’t care or know if there are any special rules, he merely has to write down a license number — and if he really wants to sell his car, he will agree to write down a fake number, and if later questioned will verify that that is what you presented him — why not, you could have shown him a bogus license, right?

Next step gets tricky. Don’t register it, and don’t insure it. I assume you will be getting an older car that may be more or less disposable? The disadvantage of course is having the car impounded, should you get stopped, but with estimates of 20-40% of California drivers being unlicensed and driving unregistered vehicles, you will not a rarity.

Sounds risky, but the risk may be worth the reward of enjoying those wheels.
